I first began painting in the early 1970's. I was heavily influenced by the work of the Fauves and their bright colours touched something within me. I adored the work of Vlaminck and Derain and especially the 'London Paintings' of the latter. I was very lucky to have a wonderful teacher in Stanley Warren, the artist who painted the murals in the Changi prisoner of war camp in Singapore during the second world war. He was a great inspiration to me and the fond memories I have of his teaching, friendship and encouragement inspire me still to this day.
It was only a short jump from the Fauves to the Expressionists and from there to the Abstract Expressionists (especially the New York school). I made the jumps with great enthusiasm. I found myself moved very much by the work of Clyfford Styll. I like the raw emotional explosion that can take place when producing an Abstract Expressionist work. Sometimes the work is made amidst a flurry or fury of energy that can sometimes leave one feeling quite exhausted.
These days I usually produce my work digitally. I like the vibrant colours that the medium can give. With the technology of today, the prints that come from these works are reproduced faithfully. Though I still enjoy painting and at a later stage will add a gallery of my paintings to this website. Please feel free to contact me if you want to ask me anything about my art. I always welcome constructive criticism too. I hope you enjoy my work. All the best,
David.
